Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Grassroots political participation is a critical component of democratic governance, as it ensures the inclusion of local populations in the decision-making process, leading to more responsive and accountable governance. In Nigeria, political participation at the grassroots level is often seen as a measure of political maturity and the strength of local democratic institutions. Zungeru, located in the Niger State, has historically been an area where grassroots political participation has faced challenges, including low voter turnout, limited political engagement, and a lack of awareness about political processes (Abdullahi & Ibrahim, 2024). Factors such as socioeconomic status, educational attainment, and political awareness significantly influence the level of participation in local elections, decision-making, and community initiatives. Grassroots participation is essential in Zungeru as it impacts not only local governance but also the development of the community, as political decisions made at the local level directly affect the day-to-day lives of citizens. Despite various attempts by political stakeholders to encourage active participation through awareness programs and local mobilization, the effectiveness of these measures remains unclear. This study aims to examine the level of grassroots political participation in Zungeru LGA, explore the barriers to participation, and assess the impact of such participation on local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Zungeru LGA, political participation at the grassroots level is relatively low, with many citizens displaying limited engagement in electoral processes and local governance activities. This lack of participation hinders the effectiveness of local government institutions and the ability of the populace to influence decisions that directly affect their lives. Despite ongoing efforts to encourage greater participation, political apathy remains widespread, leading to a disconnect between the government and the people. The study seeks to investigate the factors that contribute to low levels of grassroots political participation in Zungeru and how this affects the overall political system.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide insights into the level and nature of grassroots political participation in Zungeru LGA, helping to identify strategies for enhancing political engagement among the local population. The findings will be useful for local government officials, political parties, and civil society organizations aiming to improve democratic participation at the grassroots level. Furthermore, the study will contribute to the broader academic discourse on political participation in Nigeria, offering valuable lessons for other local governments facing similar challenges.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on grassroots political participation in Zungeru Local Government Area, Niger State. It will examine factors influencing political participation and assess its impact on local governance. The study is limited to data collection in Zungeru LGA and does not address regional or national political participation. Potential limitations include the difficulty of accessing participants due to political sensitivities and the challenge of obtaining accurate data on voter participation.
